KNOW: Knowledge exchange for Optimizing smart Wastewater management and reuse

In December 2024, World Water Academy (WWA) a tailor-made training programme started in Rabat, Morocco, as part of the MENA Scholarship Programme (MSP), funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and managed by Nuffic. This initiative focused on smart water management, including wastewater reuse, and addressed regional challenges in the Middle East and North Africa. Collaborating with Hydrologic and Resing, WWA provided sessions on the water cycle, digitalisation, and practical applications of data tools. Participants from the Ministry of Water & Equipment engaged in knowledge exchange and developed solutions for sustainable water management, setting the stage for further capacity building in the region.

 

OKP “Bridging the Water” South Africa

In 2019, the Orange Knowledge Programme: ‘Bridging the Water’ took off. The project, funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and managed by Nuffic, was a collaboration between Dutch and South African partners to improve the skills and knowledge of water professionals in South Africa and to develop sustainable knowledge-exchange and collaboration.

World Water Academy was leading partner of this project. The other Dutch partners: Technical University Delft, Hogeschool  Rotterdam, Centre of Expertise Water Technology (CEW) Leeuwarden and Waterschap Brabantse Delta. South African partners: University of Cape Town, Durban University of Technology, SALGA, City of Cape Town and eThekwini Municipality.

In the beginning of March 2023 World Water Academy celebrated the approval of the final report of OKP “Bridging the Water”. Nuffic Global Development reviewed the report with great interest and concluded that “the impact of this OKP project at the country level is noteworthy”. We are proud of all our project partners and thank them for their partnership and look forward to continuing our collaboration.

OKP “WATRA” JORDAN

In 2020 the OKP project WATRA kicked off, a collaboration between Al-Balqa’ Applied University (BAU) in Jordan, IHE Delft and World Water Academy, funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and managed by Nuffic. WATRA stands for “Strengthening skills development for WAter Treatment and Reuse in Agriculture”. The project aimed to contribute to end hunger, double smallholder productivity and income and ensure the sustainability and resilience of food production systems by 2030.

Within the project span of two years a total of 84 drinking water and wastewater professionals from Miyahuna, Yarmouk and Aqaba Water Companies took part in hands-on training courses after which they were able to directly apply their new theoretical skills into practice. Each course ended with a field visit and was tailored to the specific needs and wishes of the participants. Field visits were organized to WWTP Fuhais, WWTP Shallalah, WTP Zai and WTP Zara Ma’en.

Rand Water and World Water Academy Sign MOU for Joint Capacity Development in South Africa and Africa

At the official reception of cocreateMYCITY DURBAN Mr. Sipho Mosai, CEO of Rand Water and Mrs. Gabrielle Knufman, CEO of World Water Academy signed a Memorandum of understanding (MOU) on collaborating on capacity development opportunities and joint training activities in South Africa and Africa.

The Ambassador of the Netherlands to South Africa, Mr. Han Peters, welcomed both organizations and the audience and asked both parties to say something before witnessing the signing of the MOU.

Mr. Sipho Mosai stressed the importance of capacity building and expanding joint training activities and the good relationship with the Netherlands and World Water Academy.
