Safe Working in confined spaces
Learning targets
Work in the water sector sometimes needs to be carried out in confined spaces.This carries specific safety risks, such as the danger of toxic gases, fire, and explosions. To manage these risks, providing a proper work permit and prescribing the correct aid and intervention tools is very important.
In this course, you will learn, using situations from water board practices, the importance of good preparation. You will gain experience in drafting a simple task risk analysis. After completing this course, you will understand the importance of work procedures. You will know how to be prepared for the work and any possible interventions.
Program
The following topics will be covered:
- Characteristics of confined spaces
- Risk analysis for safe work in confined spaces
- Adequate work methods for confined spaces at height and/or depth
- Specific safety risks
- Use and interpretation of personal gas detectors
- Use of basic fall protection equipment in confined spaces
- Setup and use of mobile anchor points, such as tripods
- Pre-work briefing and standard work permit
- Organizing a safe working environment
- Preparing, organizing, and executing entry into confined spaces
- Safe and proper use of standard rescue and evacuation equipment for victim transport out of confined spaces, from the outside
- Collaboration with the emergency response organization (BHV) and emergency services in case of incidents
- Emergency and alarm procedures

This course is intended for professionals responsible for issuing work permits and/or involved in interventions in confined spaces within the water sector.
