Investigation of Sewer Condition Aspects

Learning targets

Reaching full financial depreciation, automated conclusions from management software, or a planned road renovation—these can all be reasons to address the sewer system. However, they are not a solid basis for selecting the right measures. So how do you truly determine if pipes and manholes need repair or replacement?

In the Investigation of Sewer Condition Aspects course, you will learn how to properly assess the condition of your sewer system and how to prioritize the right measures when action is needed.

The following topics will be covered:

  • quality requirements for objects in the sewer system
  • methods for investigating the condition of sewers and manholes
  • interpretation of visual inspection results
  • realistic assessment of the risks of poor condition of sewer system objects
  • possible measures: local, by section, for the system, fitting the city
  • prioritizing actions and creating a plan of action, using GWSW measures

After completing this course, you will have the following knowledge & skills:

  • adequate assessment of sewer conditions
  • possible applicable measures
  • prioritization of measures

Program

In this course, the process of condition assessment is explained using case studies. Additionally, you will work on homework assignments to apply the theory in practice. These assignments will be discussed during class.

The program consists of the following components:

  • management cycle and the importance of conducting research
  • standards in sewer management: EN 13508 1 + 2
  • research, measurement, inspection
  • visual inspection of sewers
  • professional commissioning
  • formulating the correct research question

What results come from visual inspections, and what do you do with them?

  • identifying damage patterns
  • when is the research valid? data validation, testing, etc.
  • recording research results: EN 13508-2
  • what are the important and most common damage patterns?
  • from measurement results to useful assessments; practical application of EN 13508-2
  • the table with warning and intervention thresholds
  • creating a table for your own sewer system

Recording assessment and prioritization

  • what measures are possible? locally, by section, system-wide, or fitting the city and water systems
  • systematic approach to determine and establish the right measures
  • combining with other activities or work
  • applying GWSW measures
  • execution, delivery, and revision

Personal Input

At World Water Academy, everything revolves around both knowledge and practice. Therefore, we expect each participant to bring their own work experiences to the course. What challenges are you facing? And what experiences can you share so that others can learn from them?

Target group

The Investigation of Sewer Condition Aspects course is intended for those involved in the investigation and assessment of sewer systems: operational managers, managers and policy officers at municipalities or water authorities, sewer consultants, and contractors.

Learning Together

Our group-based approach creates an enthusiastic learning environment where you can engage in valuable discussions about both the content and your work situation.

Entry Level

You should have a background in higher education (HBO level). Additionally, we expect a basic knowledge of mathematics. If you do not fully meet this requirement, the coordinator will contact you after registration to discuss what is needed to successfully complete the course.
