Geohydrology
Learning targets
Working in groundwater management at a water authority, municipality, or province, you are responsible for ensuring that this management is carried out sustainably. Therefore, you must be able to carefully assess human influences. A solid knowledge of geohydrology is essential for this. What do you need to know about geology, groundwater system analysis, and groundwater quality in the Netherlands to do your job?
In our Geohydrology course, you will explore the theory behind groundwater flow. You will solve problems on your own and evaluate proposals and outcomes of models provided. You will learn how to ask critical questions to assess risks, perform key calculations, analyze groundwater data, and gain experience with groundwater tools and models.
This course takes you beneath the surface to discover what happens underground. You will learn to understand the groundwater system and how to apply this knowledge in your daily practice.
The following topics will be covered:
- geology and groundwater system of the Netherlands
- saturated and unsaturated zones
- groundwater flow and potential theory
- groundwater data and monitoring
- system analysis
- groundwater calculations and tools
- groundwater modeling
- interaction between groundwater and environment: nature, agriculture, urban areas
- legislation and policy, Delta Program
After completing this course, you will have the following knowledge & skills:
- structure and processes of the groundwater system
- performing basic calculations on groundwater flow
- working with calculation tools and models
- evaluating proposals from third parties
- assessing risks
Program
You will investigate what happens underground. With knowledge of geology, soil types, groundwater flow, and groundwater data, you will be able to explain the effects of activities in both clean and contaminated subsurface areas.
Topics:
- geology and water system of the Netherlands
- geohydrology
- groundwater data
- legislation and policy
- groundwater and environment
- geohydrological system analysis
- hydrochemical system analysis
- calculation tools for dewatering
- system analysis modeling
Personal input
At World Water Academy, everything revolves around both knowledge and practice. Therefore, we expect each participant to bring their own work experiences to the course. What challenges are you facing? And what experiences can you share that others can learn from?
Target group
The Geohydrology course is intended for professionals involved in groundwater issues, such as policy officers, project managers, permit officers, or junior hydrologists.
Entry Level
You have a background in higher education (HBO level) and are eager to take on the challenge of working with calculations and models. If you don’t fully meet this requirement, the coordinator will contact you after your registration to discuss what is needed to successfully complete the course.
Special Notes
For several course days, you will need your own laptop to work with models and calculation tools.
