Advanced Wastewater Treatment Technology
Learning targets
For effective treatment performance, each treatment step at a wastewater treatment plant must run optimally. If you work at a wastewater treatment facility, you need a thorough understanding of these treatment steps. What kind of knowledge is required?
In the Advanced Wastewater Treatment Technology course, all the various treatment techniques for sewage and industrial wastewater are covered. You will also discover the theoretical backgrounds behind them. You will learn how to perform calculations that provide insight into the performance of the treatment process and apply these in your daily work.
After completing the Advanced Wastewater Treatment Technology course, you will have the necessary knowledge to adjust the treatment process to varying inflows using the available methods. You will also know which techniques are available to manage this process, preparing you for practical application.
The following topics are covered:
- treatment processes, process control, and technology
- chemistry and microbiology
- physico-chemical processes and legislation
- treatment processes for domestic and industrial wastewater in detail
- activated sludge principles and nitrogen and phosphorus removal in detail
- sludge line, sludge final treatment, environmental nuisances
- process control
- troubleshooting and costs
- civil engineering
- mechanical engineering
- electrical installations
- measurement and control technology
- energy, maintenance
Upon completing this course, you will have the following knowledge and skills:
- understanding treatment processes and their interrelationships
- optimizing the operation of the treatment process
- identifying problems and implementing solutions

Personal Contribution
At World Water Academy, everything revolves around both knowledge and putting that knowledge into practice. Therefore, we expect each participant to bring their own work experience to the course. What challenges do you face? And what experiences can you share so others can learn from them?
Target group
The Advanced Wastewater Treatment Technology course is intended for (process) operators, technical staff B, and process technologists who wish to apply their knowledge of the primary treatment process in practical situations. You already have knowledge of wastewater treatment but are seeking deeper insights to better adapt to innovations and stricter standards.
Entry Level
You should have a background in MBO/HBO (vocational or higher education). Additionally, we expect that you have completed the Wastewater Treatment Technology course with a result of 7.5 or higher. You should also have at least 2 years of wastewater-related work experience at an operational level. If you do not fully meet these requirements, the coordinator will contact you after registration. Together, you will discuss what is needed to successfully complete this course.
