Background:

Water- en Energiebedrijf Bonaire (WEB) must make every effort to keep services up to standard amid the rapid developments on the island. Therefore, the organization approached World Water Academy, aiming to provide employees with extensive knowledge of the entire purification process. WEB supplies drinking water and electricity to over 20,000 households, businesses, and organizations on Bonaire. With the growing population and tourism, the company wants to ensure that its services keep pace, requiring employees to be highly versatile. Thus, WEB sought to prepare them for these challenges.

Program

Tailor-made product

Each year, we provide many custom-made solutions for a variety of organizations. Together with our partners, we aim for up-to-date expertise in both the national and international water sectors. In collaboration with WEB, World Water Academy has developed a learning program consisting of two parts: an initial course followed by a continuation for operators to deepen their knowledge further. This tailor-made course was carefully tailored to the needs of WEB.

The “Basic Knowledge of Purification Systems” course consisted of 5 half-day sessions, alternating between theory and practical assignments in the workplace. The entire purification process was covered, from when wastewater enters to its treatment into by-products. The topics included:

• Purification system
• Chemistry
• Microbiology
• Pre-treatment
• Aerobic treatment
• Sludge treatment
• Calculations in the purification plant
• After successfully passing a practical exam, participants received individual certificates.

The advanced course for WEB operators lasted 6 additional half-days, focusing on troubleshooting and process optimization using examples from their own practice.

After completing the training program, participants gained the following knowledge and skills:
