Sustainability CO2

World Water Academy supports the urgency of CO2 reduction to mitigate climate change. The developments within the water sector form the basis of our range of training programs, products, and services. Our CO2 policy is aligned with the sector’s advancements, and we integrate sustainability into the activities of our educational institute. In 2024, this commitment resulted in achieving a Level 3 certification on the CO2 Performance Ladder.

Our CO2 Reduction Goals

Our objectives and progress towards achieving our goals can be found in the annual report and the CO2 Performance Ladder progress report.

To highlight the importance of CO2 reduction, we communicate about climate change, our achievements, and planned initiatives through various channels. This includes our website, intranet, events, and newsletters.

Our Key CO2 Reduction Measures:

  • promoting clean mobility (electric driving)
  • encouraging flexible work arrangements, public transport, and cycling

CO2 Emissions

In 2023, we emitted 17.4 tons of CO₂, distributed across the following categories:

  • natural gas: 0.6 tons
  • gasoline: 4.0 tons
  • business travel: 5.7 tons
  • flights <700 km: 0.2 tons
  • flights >2500 km: 6.9 tons

This emission is equivalent to the annual emissions of approximately 4 passenger cars, and about 783 trees would be needed to offset this amount.

Participations

World Water Academy participates in the initiative of Stichting Positieve Impact. This foundation organizes events with a societal theme related to sustainability. The initiative aims to inspire participants, enhance knowledge about CO2 reduction opportunities, and expand a sustainable network. We attend these events quarterly, expanding our knowledge of CO2 reduction. During these gatherings, we leverage our expertise to add value and inspire others.

In 2023, KWR Water Research Institute, Aqua Minerals, and Wateropleidingen signed an extension of their lease agreement, thereby continuing our strategic partnership. The Strategic Partner Meetings, held quarterly, offer the opportunity to combine and strengthen the unique strengths and expertise of our three organizations with the goal of achieving greater success and innovation in the circular economy for the water sector. By leveraging our networks, knowledge, and collaboration, we support each other in reaching our goals.
Additionally, we aim to reduce our shared CO2 footprint and collaborate on reduction measures. Sustainability remains a top priority.

Offices

World Water Academy is housed at the “Waterkwartier Building” in Nieuwegein. Sustainability was a guiding principle during its construction in 2014. As a result, we consume 25% less water and 60% less energy compared to a similar building without sustainability measures. We use less water due to water-saving toilets and the reuse of process water, reducing wastewater discharge into the sewer by up to 60%. Energy savings are achieved through a solar water heater, solar panels, LED lighting, energy-efficient equipment, and a heat-cooling storage system for floor heating and cooling.
